About Wicklow Golf Club

One of the oldest golf clubs on the East Coast, Wicklow Golf Club was founded in 1904 and is an 18-hole cliff top course with outstanding and unique sea views hewn from the wild coastline of Wicklow. As you play, enjoy the spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountains and the magnificent coastline from the old Wicklow Head Lighthouse to the South and all of Wicklow Bay to the North. Our course would be best described as; clifftop set, with parkland soil and a real links feel. Each hole offers a great challenge for golfers of every level.

Measuring just over 6000 yards off our back tees, you don't have to be a long hitter to post a great score here. This is a course that teaches you something every time, hopefully bringing you back again and again to this beautiful coastal challenge.

In July 1905, a press report read: "The scenery is magnificent combining views of sea and mountain while the course is very sporting and requires accurate driving." The Club has maintained this character and appeal over the decades and continues to offer a warm welcome to new members, guests and visitors.

1904 – Foundation

The course was originally laid out on a farm once owned by the O'Connor family, and from humble beginnings, it developed as a challenging nine-hole course renowned for its tight holes requiring accuracy with almost every shot and tricky greens. The old course was a demanding par 70 with 2 par 5's and four par 3's, expanding the course later on.

1994 – Course Extension

In 1991 the land to the south of Dunbur Glen was acquired, and then in 1994, the present course was officially opened with eleven new greens and alterations to several other holes. Craddock & Ruddy the course architects for the new layout retained the difficulty factor in their design, insofar as the dependency on accuracy is still required. The course is now a par 71 with 3 par 5's and 4 par 3's and is set on 90 acres with most of the original front 9 situated on the Town side of the Glen, and the newer back 9 set on a spectacular stretch of land leading out to Wicklow head.
