Club Matchplay


Welcome to the Club Matchplay page. Here we will store the details of the draws for each competition as they progress through to the eventual winners. Draws will be updated at the end of each deadline, once all matches for that particular round have been completed. Draws can be opened in PDF format. You may need to zoom in to view properly. If you encounter any issues or notice any discrepancies please contact the competitions chairperson.

2019 Winner - Conor Jameson

Background: This competition was organised by the committee in 1969 in order to encourage scratch and matchplay golf in the club.

Rules:
All matches are played off Scratch.

All matches are played from the Blue Markers or in their absence from the Permanent Stone Tee Markers.

Matches in each round must be completed and the result must be posted on the Draw Sheet before the Closing Date. The winning player is responsible for posting the result.

Both players are equally responsible for the organising of matches.  Each player must offer his opponent the choice of at least two dates to play a match.

This competition is open to any Male Ordinary, Intermediate, Junior Intermediate or Senior Member.

A breach of any of the above Rules will result in Disqualification.

Extensions to the Closing Date for any round will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances.
Any decision to allow or refuse an Extension shall be at the sole discretion of the Referee(s).

The Referee(s) shall have the right to alter the Closing Date for any or all rounds. Any decision made by the referee(s) shall be final.

Prizes will be awarded to the Winner and Runner-Up.

2019 Winner - Conor Jameson

Background: This cup was presented to the club in 1923 by the Killy Club of Dublin, in appreciation of the kindness accorded to them on their visits to the club. In 1934 the Killy Club presented a Killy Plate which was competed for annually.

Rules:
All matches are played off the player’s handicap on the date of the match

The stroke allowance is the full difference between the player’s handicaps. Example: Player A (11) plays Player B (16). Player B receives 5 Strokes.

All matches are played from the Blue Markers or in their absence from the Permanent Stone Tee Markers.

Matches in each round must be completed, and the result must be posted on the Draw Sheet before the Closing Date. The winning player is responsible for posting the result.

VIEW DRAW

2019 Winners - Mark Kavanagh & Sean Liddy 

Rules: 
All matches are played off the player’s handicaps on the date of the match.

The stroke allowance is calculated by reducing the lowest handicapped player(s) to scratch.
The remaining players receive nine tenths of the difference between their handicap and that of the lowest handicapped player. Fractions greater than one half are Rounded Up.

Example: Player A (5) & Player B (14) play Player C (8) & Player D (16)
Player A goes to Scratch and receives No Strokes
Player B receives 8 Strokes (14 – 5 = 9) 9/10ths of 9 = 8
Player C receives 3 Strokes (8 – 5 = 3) 9/10ths of 3 = 3
Player D receives 10 Strokes (16 – 5 =11) 9/10ths of 11 = 10

2019 Winners - David Delaney & Noel Dempsey 

Background: This competition was inaugurated in 1960 by the Club Committee.

Rules:
All matches are played off the player’s handicaps on the date of the match.

The stroke allowance is one half of the full difference between the player’s handicaps.
Half strokes are rounded up.

Example: Player A (5) & Player B (14) Total 19 play Player C (8) & Player D (16) Total 24 (24-19)/2 =2.5 rounded up = 3
C & D receive 3 Strokes.

All matches are played from the Blue Markers or in their absence from the Permanent Stone Tee Markers.

Matches in each round must be completed, and the result must be posted on the Draw Sheet before the Closing Date. The winning pair are responsible for posting the result.

2019 Winners - Gabriel O’Donoghue & Bernie O’Donoghue

Background: This Matchplay competition was held for the first time in 1995. It then went to abeyance until Captain Liam Devlin and Lady Captain Mary Kavanagh presented the inaugural Centenary Mixed Trophy to the club in 2004.

Rules:
The Competition shall be known as the Wicklow Golf Club Mixed Foursomes Championship and is open to any Male Ordinary, Intermediate, Junior Intermediate or Senior Member and any Lady Ordinary, Intermediate, Junior Intermediate, Senior or Associate Member. (Junior Members may enter subject to approval by the Men’s and/or Ladies Committees)

The format shall be Foursomes Matchplay played off Current Handicaps, with the man playing from the 1st tee.

The Handicap Allowance shall be: One half of the difference between the combined playing handicaps, on the day of the match, of the pairs playing the match. Max Handicaps: Men 28, Ladies 36.

Strokes to be taken according to the Stroke Index Table of the Men’s Scorecard.

All matches are played from the Blue Markers for Men and Red Markers for Ladies or in their absence from the appropriate Permanent Stone Tee Markers.

Two referees, whose decision shall be final, will be appointed, one by the Competitions Sub Committee and one by the Ladies Committee, to oversee the running of the Championship.

Any eligible member(s) wishing to play in the Club Mixed Foursomes Championship must complete an entry form and return it to the bar Staff with the entry fee. The entry fee will be determined by the Men’s Committee annually.
Players may enter as a pair or alternatively they may place their name on the sheet provided to alert other members that they are available to play.

Failure to pay the Entry Fee prior to the Closing Date will result in exclusion from the Draw.
(The Defending Champion’s shall be exempt from paying the Entry Fee provided that they enter as a pair.)

No additions or alterations will be allowed once the Draw is made.

The Draw, once made will be displayed on the Notice Board and will include the Final Date for the completion of each Round. Failure to complete a Match by the Closing Date will result in the disqualification of both pairs unless one pair has conceded the match.

Extensions to the Closing Date will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances. Any decision to allow or refuse an Extension shall be at the sole discretion of the Referees.

The Referees shall have the right to alter the Closing Date for any or all rounds.

Both pairs are equally responsible for the organising of matches. Each pair must offer their opponents the choice of at least two dates to play a match.

VIEW DRAW

Winner  2019 - Maria Kerr

Background: This beautiful challenge trophy was presented to the ladies of the club in 1910 by Colonel Charles Tottenham of Ballycurry, Ashford. Initially to be played for by lady members of the club against bogey. The competition was changed to strokes in 1912 and it remained in that format until 1960. In 1960 the competition was changed to matchplay and has since become the premier matchplay event on the ladies calendar. In 1939 when the original trophy filled up with names, the Tottenham family donated a replacement cup. In 1978 the original trophy was renamed the Tottenham Trophy and has since been used for a separate competition.

 

Conditions of Entry: Anyone wishing to play must enter their name on the Entry Sheet in the Ladies locker room and write their name on an envelope along with the entry fee and return it to the scorecard box in the Ladies locker room prior to the draw.

 

Rules for 2019:

  • Competitors shall play off their current handicaps.
  • Handicap allowance is the full difference between the Handicaps of the two players.
  • A choice of at least two dates must be offered by each player.
  • 5-Day Members must pay a green fee if playing a match on a Saturday or a Sunday.
  • There will be no extensions granted. If a match is not played by the closing date both players will be disqualified unless one of the players has received a walk-over.
  • Results of matches must be posted by winning player by due date; otherwise both players will be disqualified.
  • Referees shall have the right to alter the closing date for any or all rounds.
  • Referees decision is final.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the Winner and Runner-Up.

Winners 2019 - Gráinne Lavery and Michelle Coffey

Background: This competition began in 1968 and went into abeyance in 1977. It was resurrected in 2001 by the Lady Captain, Mary Flynn and her Committee, and it is now going stronger than ever.

 

Conditions of Entry:
Any pair wishing to play must enter their names on the Entry Sheet in the Ladies locker room and write their names on an envelope along with the entry fee and return it to the scorecard box in the Ladies locker room prior to the draw.

  • The pair with the higher combined handicap will play off half the difference between their handicap and their opponents.
  • A choice of at least two dates must be offered by each pair.
  • 5-Day Members must pay a green fee if playing a match on a Saturday or a Sunday.
  • There will be no extensions granted. If a match is not played by the closing date both pairs will be disqualified unless one of the pairs has received a walk-over.
