.... a great coastal challenge

About us

Wicklow Golf Club was founded in 1904 and is an 18-hole cliff top course with outstanding and unique sea views hewn from the wild coastline of Wicklow. As you play, enjoy the spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountains and the magnificent coastline from the old Wicklow Head Lighthouse to the South and all of Wicklow Bay to the North. Our course would be best described as clifftop set, with parkland soil and a real links feel. Each hole has a great challenge for golfers of every level.

Wicklow Golf Club is among the oldest Golf Clubs on the East Coast. The course was originally laid out on a farm once owned by the O'Connor family whose son, Peter, held the Irish long jump record until 1990. From humble beginnings it developed as a challenging nine-hole course renowned for its tight holes requiring accuracy with almost every shot and tricky greens. Although not long it challenged every class of golfer. The old course was a demanding par 70 with 2 par 5's and four par 3's, expanding the course later on.

In 1991 the land to the south of Dunbur Glen was acquired. In 1994 the present course was officially opened with eleven new greens and alterations to several other holes. Craddock & Ruddy the course architects for the new layout retained the difficulty factor in their design, in so far as the dependency on accuracy of shot is still required. The course is now a par 71 with 3 par 5's and 4 par 3's and is set on 90 acres with most of the original front 9 situated on the Town side of the Glen, and the newer back 9 set on a spectacular stretch of land leading out to Wicklow head.

The new clubhouse was opened in 2002 and is a fitting testament to it's surroundings, making the most of the picturesque scenery from every angle. With a comfortable lounge bar that overlooks the stunning Wicklow coastline, and first class restaurant facilities, the new clubhouse makes an ideal function space, meeting place, intimate venue, or just a friendly local where members can enjoy a pint and a chat. The new clubhouse provides an ideal relaxation area after the endeavours on the golf course and is always a hive of activity.

Measuring just over 6000 yards off our back tees, you don't have to be a long hitter to post a great score here. While there are definite rewards for the long hitters off the tee, with two driveable par 4's early in the round, the best scores come from those who plot their way, a true thinking man's course. 40 points always seems do-able here on a fair day, however there are doubles, triples and worse lurking on every hole. Local knowledge around Wicklow plays a big part in all the top scores, and the course teaches you something every time, hopefully bringing you back again and again to this beautiful coastal challenge.

In July 1905, a press report read: "The scenery is magnificent combining views of sea and mountain while the course is very sporting and requires accurate driving." The Club has maintained this character and appeal over the decades and continues to offer a warm welcome to new members, guests and visitors.
